Last weekend the Tour de France started in London. How amazing was that and I managed to cycle from my home both days to watch it pass. On Saturday over a million people crowded around Hyde and St James' park in London to watch the prologue time trial and London never looked better. In fact the last few years cycling was really taken off here, people are fed up of bomb scares, congested transport and high gym prices and the streets are full of riders reclaiming their bit of tarmac.
Along the route throughout Kent people had BBQ garden parties, drinking in pub beer gardens or just lining the streets and hedgerows to cheers the riders on, especially Dave Millar the British escapee who gave us someone to cheer on. We met up with several cycling clubs from the CTC at a pub taken over for the day by cyclists, tv screens in the garden and banners. The Halfway House in Brenchley was also the Kent CAMRA pub of the year for 2006 and deservedly so with a great selection of ales and food in a lovely wooden beamed bar. My dad and Angus cycled 90 miles that sunday with the Morden CTC club, we got home exhausted yet the competitors cycled 120 miles in much less time than us, and will continue to do so for the next 3 weeks.
