Venezuela - Trinidad & Tobago |
The landscape has turned into rolling savannah, palms and tepui table mountains, Hugo Chavez's smiling photo greets too as we cross the border into Venezuela. Santa Elena de Uairen is a pleasant sleepy border town, great to relax, eat and feel better after steamy Manaus. Its also a relief to be speaking Spanish again and being able to have conversations with locals. People come here to climb mount Roraima, the famous lost mountain from Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World' and Jurassic park was filmed here!

We left Belem at the mouth of the Amazon at sunset and soon the city lights faded away to darkness, but not peace. The video jukebox playing nonstop crap Brazillian pop music blasted out the sound of the engines as we settled into our cabin and chatted to some of the other travellers who were mostly staying in the crowded hammocks on middle deck. Nearing the end of our trip we decided to upgrade to our own room and get a bit more security and comfort.

Festive season
For every girl from Ipanema there are also several pot bellied sweaty ones just like everywhere else. However Rio has a unique buzz. People walk in bikinis and briefs straight from the beach to the street. Swapping planes in Montevideo we arrived in 'January River' and our Copacabana hotel. Now we have to adapt our Spanish to Portuguese.

Dynamite birthday
The sun was setting and the cold wind picking up on Lake Titicaca. We walked across into Bolivia and took a taxi into Copacabana and the German run La Cupula hotel, one of the best of our trip. Rewarding us with views over the bay from it's domed restaurant.
